GEOLOGICAL PERIODS

In the Upper Carboniferous the sea was replaced by swamps containing forests of tree-ferns and cycads where amphibians and insects lived. These plants eventually formed the coal once mined at Arigna, Co. Leitrim, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny, and Kanturk, Co. Cork.
